Electrical meters with integral AC current clamps are called clamp-on ammeters, tong testers or clamp meters. Their function is to measure the vector sum of the currents which are flowing in all the conductors passing through the probe and this depends on the phase relationship of the currents. Normally, only one conductor is passed through the probe. The same current flows down one conductor and up the other in case the clamp is closed around a two conductor cable carrying power to the equipment.
Since equipment electrical cables have both of the insulated conductors bonded together, clamp meters are usually used with a short extension cord with the two conductors separated so that the clamp can be placed around only one conductor of the extension.
